DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 200 AM MST (0900 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Sandra was located near latitude 14.6 North, longitude 110.3 West. Sandra is moving toward the north near 12 mph (19 km/h), and a turn toward the north-northeast is expected on Friday. On the forecast track, the center of Sandra could pass near Socorro Island later today or Friday morning. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 145 mph (230 km/h) with higher gusts. Sandra is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. No significant change in strength is expected today, but weakening should begin on Friday. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km).
