Interests in southern portions of the Baja California peninsula should monitor the progress of Sandra. Tropical storm or hurricane watches may be required for portions of this area on Wednesday. DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 800 PM MST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Sandra was located near latitude 12.0 North, longitude 107.9 West. Sandra is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue tonight. A turn toward the northwest is expected on Wednesday, with a turn toward the north expected on Thursday. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is forecast during the next 36 hours, and Sandra could become a major hurricane by Thursday. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km).
