DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 800 PM MST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Sandra was located near latitude 13.6 North, longitude 110.4 West. Sandra is moving toward the northwest near 8 mph (13 km/h). A turn toward the north is expected on Thursday, with a turn toward the north-northeast expected Thursday night or Friday. On the forecast track, the center of Sandra could pass near Socorro Island Thursday night or Friday morning. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 120 mph (195 km/h) with higher gusts. Sandra is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some additional strengthening is possible tonight. After that, a steady weakening is expected to begin Thursday or Thursday night. Hurricane force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km).
