DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 500 PM AST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Nicole was located near latitude 39.7 North, longitude 45.6 West. Nicole is moving toward the northeast near 9 mph (15 km/h), and this motion is forecast to continue into Monday. A faster north-northeast to northeastward motion is expected to occur by Tuesday. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 80 mph (130 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 435 miles (705 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 960 mb (28.35 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Large swells associated with Nicole will continue to affect Bermuda, the United States east coast from the Carolinas northward, and the coastline of Atlantic Canada over the next couple of days. Swells from Nicole should begin to affect the United States east coast south of the Carolinas, the Bahamas, the Greater Antilles, and the Leeward Islands in a day or two.
