DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 800 PM PDT (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Fernanda was located near latitude 11.0 North, longitude 117.0 West. Fernanda is moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h), and a general motion toward the west is expected during the next day or so. A turn toward the west-northwest is expected on Saturday. Fernanda continues to strengthen and maximum sustained winds have increased to near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts. Rapid strengthening is forecast, and Fernanda is likely to become a major hurricane on Friday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 988 mb (29.18 inches).
