DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Fernanda was located near latitude 10.9 North, longitude 118.9 West. Fernanda is moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h), and this motion is expected to continue for the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Fernanda is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional strengthening is forecast, and Fernanda is expected to become a category 4 hurricane this weekend. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 969 mb (28.62 inches).
