DISCUSSION AND 48-HOUR OUTLOOK ------------------------------ At 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Fernanda was located near latitude 11.0 North, longitude 123.0 West. Fernanda is moving toward the west near 13 mph (20 km/h). A turn toward the west-northwest with a slight increase in forward speed is expected later today, and that motion should continue through the weekend. Maximum sustained winds are near 140 mph (220 km/h) with higher gusts. Fernanda is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next two days, but Fernanda is forecast to remain a major hurricane into early next week. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles (110 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 952 mb (28.12 inches).
