Interests on Johnston Island should monitor the progress of Hector. A Tropical Storm Watch may be issued for Johnston Island on Thursday. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 PM HST (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 16.6 North, longitude 158.5 West. Hector is moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue through Thursday. A gradual turn toward the west-northwest is expected from Thursday night through Friday. Note that on the forecast path, the center of Hector will pass a few hundred miles south of Oahu and Kauai through early Thursday morning. Maximum sustained winds are near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Little significant change in strength is forecast during the next couple of days. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km).
