All interests in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, including Midway and Kure Atolls and the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument west of Maro Reef, should monitor the progress of Hector. A Tropical Storm Watch may be issued for portions of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands later today or tonight. This does not include any of the main Hawaiian Islands. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 18.0 North, longitude 167.2 West. Hector is moving toward the west-northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h). This motion is expected to continue today, followed by a turn toward the northwest tonight and Saturday. This general motion should continue through Monday. Maximum sustained winds are near 140 mph (220 km/h) with higher gusts. Hector is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Slow weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 110 miles (175 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 947 mb (27.97 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Hector should begin to impact Johnston Island today. This will likely produce large and dangerous waves along portions of the island from later today through tonight.
