DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 AM HST (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Hector was located near latitude 22.8 North, longitude 174.2 West. Hector is moving toward the northwest near 16 mph (26 km/h). This general motion is expected to continue today, followed by a turn toward the west-northwest tonight through Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds are near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts. Steady weakening is forecast today, and Hector could become a Tropical Storm later today or tonight. Little change in intensity is then forecast Monday through Wednesday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 100 miles (155 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 984 mb (29.06 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Hector is producing swell that will affect portions of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands over the next couple of days. The large southeast seas and swells will peak between Maro Reef and Lisianski Island today, and across Pearl and Hermes, Midway Atoll and Kure Atoll late today through Monday. WIND: Tropical Storm conditions are possible across Lisianski Island and Pearl and Hermes Atoll today. Tropical Storm conditions are possible across Kure Atoll and Midway Atoll tonight and Monday.
