DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 PM HST (0900 UTC), the center of Hurricane Norman was located near latitude 19.6 North, longitude 146.6 West. Norman is moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue through early Wednesday morning. Norman is expected to slow its forward motion slightly, and turn toward the west-northwest on Wednesday. A turn toward the northwest is expected from Wednesday night through Thursday. Maximum sustained winds are near 90 mph (150 km/h) with higher gusts. Some additional intensification is forecast through early Wednesday, followed by gradual weakening from late Wednesday through Thursday. Norman is expected to remain a hurricane through Thursday evening. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 30 miles (45 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 978 mb (28.88 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Large swells generated by Norman will continue to spread from east to west across the Hawaiian Islands during the next couple of days. Large and potentially dangerous surf produced by these swells is expected along east facing shores through Thursday night.
