DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Olivia was located near latitude 17.0 North, longitude 118.2 West. Olivia is moving toward the west near 12 mph (19 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue through tonight. A turn toward the west-northwest and an increase in forward speed are expected on Wednesday. Maximum sustained winds are near 105 mph (165 km/h) with higher gusts. Additional strengthening is expected today, and Olivia could become a major hurricane. A gradual weakening is expected beginning late Wednesday or Wednesday night. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km).
