DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 200 PM PDT (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Barbara was located near latitude 11.5 North, longitude 118.5 West. Barbara is moving toward the west near 16 mph (26 km/h), and a gradual turn to the west-northwest along with a decrease in forward speed is expected over the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 85 mph (140 km/h) with higher gusts. Barbara is expected to rapidly intensify into a major hurricane on Tuesday. A weakening trend is expected to begin by Thursday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 160 miles (260 km).
