DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 PM HST (0300 UTC), the center of Hurricane Barbara was located near latitude 14.9 North, longitude 128.5 West. Barbara is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h). A west-northwest to northwest motion is anticipated for the next day or two, followed by a turn toward the west on Saturday. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 130 mph (215 km/h) with higher gusts. Barbara is a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Additional weakening is forecast, and Barbara is expected to weaken to a tropical storm on Friday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km).
