DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 AM HST (1500 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Barbara was located near latitude 16.0 North, longitude 130.0 West. Barbara is moving toward the northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h). A west-northwest to northwest motion is anticipated during the next day or so, followed by a turn toward the west on Saturday. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 115 mph (185 km/h) with higher gusts. Barbara is a category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Rapid weakening is forecast, and Barbara is expected to weaken to a tropical storm on Friday and become a post-tropical cyclone on Saturday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles (75 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 185 miles (295 km).
