DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the eye of Hurricane Barbara was located near latitude 16.7 North, longitude 130.8 West. Barbara is moving toward the northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h). A west-northwest to northwest motion is anticipated during the next day or so, followed by a turn toward the west on Saturday. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to near 100 mph (155 km/h) with higher gusts. Rapid weakening is forecast, and Barbara is expected to weaken to a tropical storm on Friday and become a post-tropical cyclone on Saturday. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles (280 km).
