DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Erick was located near latitude 13.6 North, longitude 144.1 West. Erick is moving toward the west near 15 mph (24 km/h). A slight turn to the west-northwest, with some slowing in forward speed, is expected later today. A general motion toward the west-northwest is then expected to continue through Thursday. Maximum sustained winds are near 130 mph (215 km/h) with higher gusts, making Erick a category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Little change in strength is expected over the next day or so, with steady and significant weakening expected thereafter. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 25 miles (35 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 952 mb (28.12 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Swells generated by Erick will arrive in the Hawaiian Islands over the next couple of days, potentially producing dangerous surf conditions, mainly along east facing shores.
