Interests in the Leeward Islands should monitor the progress of this system. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 PM AST (0300 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Josephine was located by an Air Force Reserve reconnaissance aircraft near latitude 20.1 North, longitude 62.6 West. Josephine is moving toward the west-northwest near 14 mph (22 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue for the next day or two, followed by a turn toward the northwest and north early next week. On the forecast track, the center of Josephine is expected to pass to the northeast and north of the Leeward Islands tonight through Sunday. Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts. Josephine is now in an area of unfavorable upper-level winds, and weakening is expected during the next couple of days. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 115 miles (185 km) to the north of the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1008 mb (29.77 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- RAINFALL: Josephine is expected to cause storm-total rainfall of 1 to 3 inches over portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.
