The Tropical Storm Watch for portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Maro Reef to Lisianski has been upgraded to a Tropical Storm Warning. A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Lisianski to Pearl and Hermes Atoll. The Tropical Storm Warning for portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Nihoa to French Frigate Shoals has been discontinued. SUMMARY OF WATCHES AND WARNINGS IN EFFECT... A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for... * Portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from French Frigate Shoals to Maro Reef to Lisianski A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for... * Portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument from Lisianski to Pearl and Hermes Atoll A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning area, in this case within the next 24 hours. A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible somewhere within the watch area, in this case within the next 24 to 36 hours. Interests elsewhere in the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument should monitor the progress of this system. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 500 AM HST (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Douglas was located near latitude 24.1 North, longitude 166.6 West. Douglas is moving toward the west-northwest near 21 mph (33 km/h), and this general motion is expected to continue for the next couple of days. Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Weakening is forecast over the next couple of days, and Douglas is expected to dissipate by Thursday. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km) from the center. The estimated minimum central pressure is 1002 mb (29.59 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- WIND: Tropical storm conditions are expected to spread from French Frigate Shoals to Maro Reef, including Gardner Pinnacles, today and tonight. Tropical storm conditions are then expected over the area from Maro Reef to Lisianski, including Laysan, later tonight into Wednesday. Tropical storm conditions are possible over the area from Lisianski to Pearl and Hermes Atoll on Wednesday. SURF: Large seas and swells generated by Douglas will impact a large swath of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument the next day or two. These swells will produce large breaking waves that could inundate some of the lower-lying atolls. RAINFALL: Rainfall associated with Douglas will impact portions of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument through Wednesday.
