DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 800 AM PDT (1500 UTC), the center of Hurricane Marie was located near latitude 15.2 North, longitude 119.5 West. Marie is moving toward the west-northwest near 17 mph (28 km/h), and this general motion with decreasing forward speed is expected to continue for the next few days. Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 105 mph (165 km/h) with higher gusts. Rapid strengthening is forecast during the next day or so, and Marie is expected to become a major hurricane by tonight or sooner. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles (30 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles (130 km).
